My Paintings

Greyhound

Here's two of my dog pictures, I do these by request, off friends and charge just enough to cover costs and feed me and Defor a decent meal. Painting and drawing have always been a way for me to relax, and a way for me to thank people who have helped me in life. I like giving them to some people just to see how much happiness it gives them.

Border Collie

Since getting my first camera in August my painting as taken a backseat because of my photography. I have surprised myself with some of the pictures I have taken. Some of the comments left here have made me very happy, but all have gone a long way to making me realise I should have done this years ago. I am now planing to carry on with the camera and to start painting some of the results. Hopefully my art and my picture taking will bring me the relaxation and happiness I long for.
At the end of another week of blogging I would again like to thank all who have visited here, to the ones who have left comments thank you for your time. I must also at this time thank Tom and Jane for the help and friendship so gladly given.

Is there no end to you talents Pete?
Photography - painting, certainly an eye for both - also I would like to thank YOU Pete, for showing us your talents and sharing them with us.

Ditto to what imac said! I have so enjoyed your's and Tom's photos.

I love both the paintings, but I must say this one of the greyhound has soul in it...do you know this dog well? I think the reason I love it so is she reminds me of our collie mix mutt. (Or is it a boy?) She talks with her eyes, and can read my mind by looking me in the eyes.

Peter, these are wonderful rederings. Clearly, you have a lot of respect for your subjects.

I have been enjoying your photos here and at Tom's blog. It's a pleasure to see such fine work and learn a thing or two along the way.

Our son did some drawings of his Greyhouds, they use to have three. They were beautiful, just as your painting is.

I wish there were some way I could send you a photo of our sons. I just remembered there is, he has a web site, he hasn't worked on it much lately, but if you go here
http://clphotodesign.com/Site%204/Illustration.html and scroll down to the third row and then double click the dogs, it will enlarge it some, he did them in pen and ink.

Believe it or not, Abe use to do a lot of paintings and drawings and take them to art shows and sell them. He hasn't painted or done any drawings for years. He then went to Calligraphy, but he doesn't even do that any longer.

Thanks for sharing your paintings.

That dog on top is a greyhound or looks like one. My son, who is also an artist but much better than me, and a photographer, I am better than him in photography, used to have three greyhounds and in his small house they filled it up. My wife and I stayed there once and woke up to get out of bed and the floor was wall-to-wall dogs.

You have a great gift, Peter. You are where I was at about the same age. Trying to figure out how to make a living painting. It is hard to do and I never made it. A sign painter man told me once that I would never be able to retire doing any kind of work with my two hands. He said, and I believe him, you have to make money with your brains.

Normal Rockwell, made money with his brains and hands and he was a friend of mine. He told me to stick to realism in painting and drawing and I did.

You are able to make beautiful things with your hands and now your camera gets the pictures you can copy. You need to take photos to paint of people or places or things that everyone in your community would recognize. That automatically gives you a larger audience. You don't have to paint on speculation but you can paint things that people know about and are familiar with and can look at your painting and say, "Oh, yes, I have been there." Those are the kinds of things a lot of people will hang on their walls and pay good money for.

Your dog pictures are good. I should think you can get more than one meal for them. LOL. Also, always do the paintings but let the buyer frame the work. That way they get the painting they want and they can choose a frame for it that they want. And it saves you the time and expense of framing them.

If your community is mostly old people like me, then paint things that they remember. It will remind them of how things were. The young people in the community will look at them and think or wish they had seen that or experienced that.

I wish you luck Peter. You deserve a bit of a break now and then. Don't waste your talent.

Peter, the fact that YOU realize your many potentials not just in photography but painting is awesome. I suspect Tom and Jane knew it was there all along. You are blessed having them as friends, as well as they are blessed having you as a friend. Keep it up Peter…there is much ground to cover…

Wow! Those paintings are spectacular. Wonderful details. I can only dream of being able to paint or draw. I can't do either, unless you include my stick people and my box house. LOL.

Hi Pete, so glad you showed us these, they are very good. The top dog has so much expression! It is great having friends like Tom and Jane... friendship is one of the things that really makes our lives richer. But speaking of richer, you are selling yourself short!

There is no way these drawings should go for the cost of a meal! If you are too modest to put decent prices on them, ask Tom or someone in the art world to price them for you. And nice as it is to be generous and give them away (I know, I'm a great one to speak here!) it is also a good thing to sell them for what they are worth. That way you will be able to afford professional materials that produce pictures that will last, and people will not mind paying good prices for them!

Painting your photos is a good idea on days when it is too miserable outdoors, but with the amount of time you spend outdoors, you will have great opportunities to paint from life too. If possible, see if you can find a book in the library called "A light touch, painting landscapes in oils" by David Curtis. It is brilliant and will tell you lots of practical stuff from the point of view of someone who paints the English countryside outdoors.
good luck!

Your dog paintings catch the essence of the dog, as if they might have something to tell us.

I know Peter will be very pleased with these comments... so on his behalf I'd like to thank you all.

I have not seen him today to pass these on, but I am picking him up tomorrow to go and take a few picturs of this field in flood that I've come across.
