Peak Forest Canal

I would get on board that boat and take a spin on it if I could. It looks so neat and probably makes a "clunk clunk" engine sound but it sure looks nice in the water.

When I was growing up we used to have a lot of one cylinder engines that also had a large flywheel off to one side and you had to spin that to get them started. The flywheel, once started, was also used with a leather belt to run machines.

They made a "whump whump" engine sound.

Hope you and Defor are OK, Peter. I think about you guys out in the boondocks a lot. I remember the times when I found myself out in the boonies by myself and wondering what would happen if I keeled over.

I remember once in the mountains in the desert near Tucson, Arizona, I walked alone up the side of this mountain covered in rock, cactus and scrubby stuff. My big concern was rattlesnakes and gila monsters. I didn't see any but I did set down and in those days, when I could afford it, I bought and smoked a cigarette or two.

So I am setting on this rock on top of this mountain smoking a cigarette and heard something behind me. I turned my head slowly and there, not far from me was a wild sheep or ram. I don't know the name, but he was the leader of a group. All white with long hair (not short like a dog) and horns. He had a harem with him and I guess they were as surprised to see me as I was to see them. They grunted and saunter off and down around the mountain and out of sight.

Those were exciting times for me. I was 17 years old.

Great picture Peter, then I read what Abraham wrote....made me think back to being on the Mighty Ohio River where I skied, and fished and took in the lovely sights...i.e. Blennerhassett Island.... AH memories

Well everyone is sharing their memories so here is mine...when I graduated from high school another girl and I spent several days on the St. John's River in Florida. We slept in lawn chairs and at night (something probably a coon) came up and rumaged through our stuff and scared us to death. That was back when it was safe for girls to do such. Haven't thought about that in years.
It always amazes me to see those little canals and the funny looking boats in your area. Just a different design from what I'm used to seeing.

I can tell all the ones who've posted above me that Peter will be over the moon now to see and hear these memories...
Peter as spent months at a time living in tents... I left home at 15 and lived rough for a time and my safety at night was an issue back then... I was lucky enough to find an old hearse which had proper leather padded seats.. I slept in there for many weeks, I think back to those times now and wonder at it all...

What a wonderful photo. I've never seen a boat like that before. I like that it is in B&W.
