Man's Best Friend
The ladies and the dogs below are my inspiration for today's post, I love my dog and it goes everywhere with me and comes first in my life. The dogs below for what ever reason are abandoned or unwanted dogs that have been rescued and given a second chance by the two ladies below. It is a good thing that folk like them are there acting as a safety net for this kind of dog.

What the Greyhound Rescue As To Say
One of the oldest breeds of dog, the greyhound has sadly fallen from its aristocratic connections to be the victim of callous exploitation, discarded on a whim. Companion of kings to unwanted outcast, his speed and working ability have been his downfall. There are many excellent owners and trainers who keep their retired dogs, but there are probably more greyhounds than any other single pure breed in dog pounds and rescue kennels throughout the country. This is because they are bred in their thousands for the chance of a few winners. Ultimately, many of them are losers - those who won't race, those who injure themselves in the process and those who race well, but eventually become too old to win.
Within the UK, Greyhound Rescue is organised as an informal association of local groups of varying sizes. These groups operate in different ways depending on the perceived need in their particular area. Despite the overwhelming need of help for ear marked ex-racing greyhounds, most local groups tend not to differentiate, recognising that 'a greyhound is a greyhound' whether tattooed or not. The surfeit of greyhounds is one of the factors accounting for the vast number of unwanted lurchers (greyhound crosses). Whenever possible, local Greyhound Rescue groups will take on some of these pathetically neglected dogs as well.

My Sightings
All these put us to shame, here I and my friend had stopped as the walk up the hill had taken its toll. This group had kept up with us all the way, but a bit further back from us. They posed for this shot, excepted my thanks and praise and off they went, leaving us in awe.
Meet my good friend and walking companion David.. resting here and taking in the views. I have been up hill and down dale with this chap. A great dog man who kept sight hounds for hunting from an early age. David like so many now hunts with only the camera.
My dog 'Defor' ever watchful, and ever ready to go whereever I go. I now leave him with Tom and Jane at certain times and he likes nothing better than curling up near Tom and then breaking wind. To see and hear Tom when he dose this is very amusing. I cannot say here what Tom then calls him, but it is certainly not Defor. Jane just shoos him out and get the Air Freshener. Tom says that in years to come he will think back and say about Defor.. " he was a great Dog Peter, but by heck he could fart".
These are my favourite kind of views, looking back at the houses below as I make my way over to the moors. Leaving the streets and houses behind for the openness of the hills. No sounds, sights or smells of traffic just the distance views of the smog which seems to hang over the town and city centres all the time now. To be up above breathing the fresh air is a true joy... and it is of course free to all who can make it up here.Monday, 18 February 2008
Game Keeper Lee

From an early age Lee was interest in nature and wildlife, when the chance came to follow up this interest he jumped at the chance and I don't think he as looked back since.

These are some of the views Lee sees one a daily basis while going about his job as a game keeper . To many, a Gamekeeper is someone who is an indiscriminate destroyer of wildlife, providing sport for a privileged few. In fact the case of the modern gamekeeper, could be not be further from the truth. Lee grew up with a great knowledge of nature and wildlife and now he living the dream. I have a few pictures to show which Lee as kindly sent me... some do show the outcome of a hunt/cull but I'll post them again with an explanation of the whys and whyfors.
